The disgraceful cost of the Iraq War

In the news today is word from Afghanistan that those wacky pranksters in the Taliban thought it would be a hoot to spray some teenage girls walking to school in the face with acid. Now two of them are blind! Hooray for the religion of peace. (Because it is, of course, against their precious religion that women should be educated.)

Why is this part of the disgraceful cost of the Iraq War? Why, because if we hadn't pulled troops out of Afghanistan in order to invade Iraq, a country that had exactly two things — jack and shit — to do with 9/11, then we could have spent the last five years still in Afghanistan, killing every single living member of the Taliban we could find. Which is no less than they deserve. Oh, dear. Was that not sufficiently politically correct? Good, I'll say it again. Every single living member of the Taliban should be killed. Summarily. And left to rot in the street. Or a ditch. I'm not particular.

  1. Martin, couldn't you also make the argument that similar tragedies would have continued occurring in Iraq if we didn't invade?

Stupid people are killing innocent civilians everywhere.

Stupid people are killing innocent civilians everywhere, but that isn't exactly Martin's point.

  3. I think his political rant was tangential to the point.

Islam claims to be the religion of peace yet it is so firmly ensconced in Arabic culture and the Arab's horrific treatment of women that the two have become intertwined. The Quran does not advocate treating women as second class but the Arabs have for ages and now they do it in the name of Allah and....

    yeah.

  4. Stephen,

Sure, there are ghastly abuses of women taking place all throughout the Muslim world (let's not even get started on female "circumcision"). In this particular instance, what we have is a situation where, after 9/11, we retaliated against the Taliban and removed them from power, only to abandon the country while it was still in utter chaos in order to fulfill Bush's moronic fantasy of "liberating" Iraq, based on fabricated evidence.

The result in Afghanistan has been the resurgence of both al Qaeda and the Taliban. If this is how to fight a "War of Terror," I can't think of a situation where the phrase "epic fail" could apply more.

If we'd given Afghanistan our full attention for the last five years and devoted our efforts to wiping those scumbags out to the last man, well, maybe they wouldn't be running around committing cowardly assaults on little girls. Because the guys who did this deed would have been long since blown to bits by a bunker buster.

    I'm just sayin'.

  5. Oh my gosh every time I hear the words female circumcision I feel very sick to my stomach. The first time I learned what it was was when I was reading God is not Great and I actually thought I was going to vomit. How evil and vile do you have to be to do that to a baby.
Martin I couldn't agree with you more!

And given the remarkably indiscriminate nature of 'bunker busters' and other US military innovations, how many little girls would the 'good guys' have killed in the process?

Is it more okay for Americans, in cowardly fashion, to kill little girls from in the air-conditioned comfort of their F16 cockpits than for Taliban cowards to disfigure them?

    I'm just askin'

  7. Killed and left rotting in the streets? The Taliban beat you there, when they massacred the Hazara minority and left them to rot in the streets for six days, without burial, because it was Islamic law that bodies had to be buried in three days. They punished them after they were dead. Fuck them.
